A single gene may protect its carrier against a a whole variety of cancers, as shown in new research. 2 versions of the B-MYB gene found in up to half of the world's population are less likely in people with cancer, the journal Nature reports. Dr Arturo Sala of The Institute of Child Health said it might show to be a "key find" in cancer. The charity Cancer Research UK claimed that more research will give stronger evidence of how it will help stop the killer disease. More indepth research had already shown B-MYB having a role in the spread of cancer. It has been found to be over-active in many different types of cancer. The newest analysis tested just over 400 people with either colon cancer, a brain tumour called neuroblastoma, clinically called chronic myeloid leukaemia. Their version of the B-MYB gene was tested and tested against the types seen in 230 "controls" - people with no known cancer.
